Empowering Churches, Equipping Disciples Conference

In November 2017, 168 Christian leaders from across Asia and the world gathered in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for the Increase Association conference ‘Empowering Churches, Equipping Disciples’. They shared a vision for “churches equipping all Christ’s followers in their contexts, so that many millions are discipled and empowered for mission, ministry and leadership.”

Asia today is seeing unprecedented Christian growth, with several million new followers of Christ each year and many thousands of new churches. From Egypt to Indonesia and most countries in between, indigenous movements are responding to the need to make disciples and equip local leaders. They are linked through the Increase Association and comprised most of the conference participants, along with some visitors from Africa, the Americas, Europe and Australasia.

Through these Asian movements, more than 100,000 believers are being equipped through intentional discipleship groups every week.

‘Empowering Churches, Equipping Disciples’ Conference Statement

Asian peoples are on the move as never before. Recognizing this important trend, one aim of the 2017 Increase Conference was “to help church-based training organizations work together to disciple Asian believers in diaspora”.

Conference participants discussed, refined and declared their commitment to work together for this in the coming five years. Many participants were from the former Soviet countries, so the statement is in both English and Russian.

Course Writers in Asia

The Course Writers Training breaks new ground.  It will equip twelve selected Increase member organizations to write new TEE courses for their own Asian contexts in the 21st century.

How was this training developed?

Two of Increase’s Task Groups worked together:

  • The Transformational Learning group focused on how transformation happens for adult learners;
  • The New Courses for Asia task group brings expertise from Increase members already experienced in writing courses for their contexts.

Throughout the planning period we were helped by senior advisors with expertise in education, including Dr. Patricia Harrison, Dr. Perry Shaw and Dr. Allan Harkness.

A World on the Move

Greetings from the Increase Association!

Tim Green, General Secretary of Increase

Increase works to connect and strengthen church-based training organizations across Asia.   In the past, each national group just worked within its own country.  But now, more than ever before, people are scattered abroad as ‘diaspora’.  Believers from many Asian nations live in many other countries.  So how can they keep growing in Christ and witness for him wherever they are located?

In this edition of the Increase bulletin we focus on ‘discipling the diaspora’.  Future editions will feature other cutting-edge issues. To receive the bulletins four times a year, write to us on .  And feel free to forward or retweet this article to your friends! Our Twitter handle is @IncreaseAssoc.
